The Gratitude Project: Day 4: Rock 'em Sock "em Middle Age

June 11th 2008 04:41
I am grateful for middle age. I am to the point in my life where the young part of me is cherished, the old me is unimaginable, and the "me" in the here and fits just right. I am not young anymore except to the 4:30 dinner crowd at Lubys. I am not old yet, except to the sixteen year old at the drive throughs who calls me "ma'am" (which I hate with a passion but it is a "Southern thing").

Maybe as I age I will become cantankerous and "hard to handle" or take on the appearance of an elder model type with the lithe body of someone who has taken yoga for twenty years, or maybe I will become a tree hugging, Birkenstock wearing, dangly earring sporting, boob sagging, hippie. I haven't decided yet.. I will live life to the fullest....'fo sho!

My girlfriends have generally been older than me. Once they reached their 40s they seemed to settle into their skin, their lives, their souls. Women would talk about dreading turning 40, and I would always reply "Are you kidding? I can't wait!" Well, it didn't magically happen for me the day I turned 40, but it seeped into me slowly over several years. Now at 45, I have settled into my skin, my life, my soul. I have been the maid and the mother. Time to embrace the crone. Time to rock 'em sock 'em as you say!

You are so right, being settled in middle age is absolutely intoxicating.

I hear you... loud and clear... I wouldn;t swap this age for anything ... all the radiance and health of a teenager, tempered with the knowledge and experience of 40 odd years and without the problems of youth ahmpering REAL progress ... OH I think I have died, and am already in heaven?
