Salt of the Earth: A Farmer's Work Ethic

February 6th 2008 03:13
This is part of a letter my grandad sent to me about working on our family farm. Thought I would share it with you guys as it meant a lot to me.

February 1969

A strong work ethic combined with the ability to focus, and exhibit leadership and courage, can make people of average intelligence appear to be genuises. There are three ways to harvest the "fruit of labor and intelligence:

1. Study or obtain knowledge in books, experience, and observing and listening to others
2. Focus and immerse yourself completely on the task at hand.
3. Act on what you learned without fear.

Mistakes are inevitable whether or not a person possesses true genuis. It is possible to achieve great things through a stong work ethic. Hard work matters, and persistence always pays in the end whether it is at work or with the folks whom you love.

Living on the land has brought a significant increase in my self development and my humility toward all things. In respect of your grandfather's words: Number one is something I have never had any trouble with, number two is still my greatest difficulty, and number three is where the true gold awaits.
It takes a lot of courage to put yourself into the hands of the gods and go it alone. Your grandfather's advice is a nutshell reminder of what it takes: right thinking, right action, right judgement and an unflinching faith in the essential dignity of of the human spirit.

Sure do wish that ornery persistence would come through for me. I've never been short on persistence but it's beginning to wear a bit thin.

I think farmers are the salt of the earth, no one has it tougher.

Glad to have something first hand.
