Eros: The Agony and the Ecstacy
February 14th 2008 02:44
Eros, is the Greek god of love and sexual desire (the word eros, which is found in the Iliad by Homer, is a common noun meaning sexual desire). He was also worshiped as a fertility god, believed to be a contemporary of the primeval Chaos, which makes Eros one of the oldest gods.
From the early legend of Eros it is said that he was responsible for the embraces of Uranus (Heaven or Sky) and Gaia (Earth), and from their union were born many offspring. It was also written that Eros ws the father of mankind and made it appear first into the light (Birds, by Aristophanes). Sometimes Eros was worshiped by the name Erotes (which is the plural of Eros); this personified all the attractions that evoked love and desire.
The sacred eros love or erotic love is celebrated in every culture. It is said to be the key to all reality, the touch stone (wink wink) that allows us to cut throught the illusions of other more superficial forms of human experience. Sexual passion strips away illusions and disguises while revealing the true identity. Erotic lve is connected to a transcendent state, or at least to an aspect of the state. It is a natural and as astonsihing and mysterious as fireflies...bodies of light in the midst and damp darkness of a marsh. The figures of light correspond to spiritual enlightenment.
Eros brings beauty, meaning, and divinity into our lives. It comes to us through a very particular epiphany, a passionate inspiration present in a particular friend, lover, teacher, melody, or landscape. We long to follow it always. Yet eros may also bring obsession, cruelty, abandonment, and betrayal. Sometimes love seems dangerous, hopeless, or naive. How in the midst of sorrow that seems too great to bear, can we see through to the truth that our loving is always right?
We travel between heaven and earth, bringing not only beauty, love and inspiration, but also chaos and disruption as we ignite unexpected and irrisistable passions. The thread that leads from this disruption to a vision of the soul''s pure beauty and the skills and means for becoming ourselves.

This is sad for so many and also sad for their opposites. So I'll leave you with that cryptic puzzle, and if it's too hard, hop on over to my place and do some brain exercises.
Bit harder than getting eros together.
Interesting.
