Rules of Considerate Conduct: MINDING YOUR BODY BEYOND GOOD GROOMING

October 20th 2007 00:20
You can thank my Grandmother Marie for this one!

The civility of body management is more than good grooming habits. Here are some other civil ways to deal with our bodies that are equally important:

*Keep your fingers at a safe distance from your mouth, ears, and nose. You may think that the food you are eating is finger licking good. This doesn’t allow you to dramatize the cliché in front of your dinner companions, at the risk of eliciting justified twinges of disgust. If your fingers are sticky with food, wipe them with a napkin or wash your hands. Don’t use your fingers to dislodge food from your teeth; what you need instead is a toothbrush and a bathroom. Don’t stick a finger in your ear to collect anything, real or imaginary. If your ears need care, use Q-tips, or wax-removing tools in the privacy of your bathroom. Never stick your fingers up your nose. Simple and quick nose cleaning may be done wherever you are with the help of a handkerchief or a tissue. More elaborate nose care is done in private. As for nose blowing, do it quickly and unobtrusively. Afterward, don’t check the handkerchief’s contents as if – to use the vivid image found in the medieval and Renaissance courtesy tracts – you expected pearls and precious stones to have fallen from your brain.

*Keep your mouth closed at all times while chewing. This, of course, means that you shouldn’t talk and chew at the same time. Don’t make any noises with your mouth. No slurping, no audible chewing, no smacking of the lips. Cover your mouth with your hand when yawning, coughing, or sneezing. The best way of handling a sneeze, however, is with the help of a handkerchief or a tissue.

*Don’t sniffle, snort, or make any other unpleasant and annoying noise with your nose or your throat.

*Head for the bathroom whenever intestinal gas becomes a problem. Always wash your hands thoroughly on your way out.

*Never spit. Be careful not to spray those around you as you speak. If you speak at length (giving a presentation for instance), unobtrusively wipe you mouth with a clean handkerchief once in a while. You will thus eliminate any unsightly buildup at the corners of your mouth.

*Don’t scratch yourself.

*Don’t chew your fingernails.

*No toothpicks period!

*Women should not swear or smoke in public.

My grandmother believed that when we are well groomed, we often experience a sense of both physical and psychological well being. We feel good, and we feel good about ourselves. When we feel good about ourselves, we are better disposed toward others, treat them better, and are thus better treated in return.

Hi Mis

All good advice as usual. I particularly agree with this one:

Keep your mouth closed at all times while chewing. This, of course, means that you shouldn’t talk and chew at the same time. Don’t make any noises with your mouth. No slurping, no audible chewing, no smacking of the lips.

I cannot stand chompers!! I have to leave the room....

Good Advice from Grandma here...Mis,

Never spit. Be careful not to spray those around you as you speak.
This is a pet peeve of mine - people who think nothing of showering you everytime they have something to say - yuk!

<LOL>
Loving this advice

Hi Mis

I just thought of a few more things that I cannot endure without grimacing and usually make me have to leave the room:

chair-knockers
jaw-clickers
nudgers
ear-hole cleaners
public flossing

and yes, I agree, any toothpick action should be done in a tiny, dark room where I can't see or know about it.

What a delightfully tolerant person I am

Me again....

I agree:

I have a good friend that does this all the time despite me hinting that it's gross.....why do some people have a sense of glee when they see what came out of their nose? It's nothing to be proud of, they didn't cullivate it with talent, it just grows by itself.

Byeee

You're at the movies and some jerkovitz sitting behind you, thinks nothing of constantly kicking your chair....Grrrrr! Worse still, you have someone two seats up who is shaking the whole isle of seats with his leg shaking antics!

CALL THE USHER!!!!!!

HAHAHAHAHA Mis

Some excellent words passed on by your grandmother - I wonder if they went to the same school as my grandmother was also very particular about these things too.

And one should never go out with wet hair!

I must admit sprayers and chompers are a pet peeve of mine too. And nose pickers/blowers. And scratchers. AND BURPING! It seems to be the accepted thing here that it is OK to burp as loudly as possible at any given moment... that`s just gross.

And pimple squeezing in public should just be a NO NO for sure! People sure have some strange habits don`t they?

Apparently there was some footage released last week of our (maybe) soon to be new Prime Minister sitting parliament having a good old scratch in his ear. He then removes said finger and contents from ear and after closely inspecting it STICKS HIS FINGER IN HIS MOUTH! GAG!!!!!!!!!!!!!

echhh I feel sick now!

You've added some great ones, Ash....

That story about the possible prime minister's ear action is disgusting!! He shouldn't be allowed in parliament with etiquette like that!!!

The PM story totally grossed me out. I totally agree with you there. I really hate to pull up in the car to someone who is picking their nose. Good God they aren't going to strike gold up there!
