Getting to Know You: Therapeutic Interview Questions

August 17th 2007 03:50
As a therapist, I must build rapport with my clients. I like to use "interview questions" during the assessment or initial session hoping to promote interesting dialogue. This questions are also great ice breakers at a party.

Here are a few of the questions that I like:

If you were going to be involved in a crash, what vehicle would you be in? (if it has wheels and moves, it's a vehicle)

2. Vanilla or chocolate (take this as you will)?

3. Tell me about your most interesting or unusual job?

4. What are you most afraid of?

Readers what say YOU?

What happened to...."and how does that make you feel?"

1. Toughie. Probably a semi-trailer or something in order to survive, but wouldn't be happy about hurting the other car / people.
2. Chocolate
3. Rather not say!
4. or 5.? Afraid of not mattering, of my life being of no importance of consequence, losing loved ones.

I already know I'm crazy so you can't shock me with your response - analyse that!

Cheers
CC
PS - Is there a question missing or something?

HAHA at CC! Let me just say, if ANY of the many councillors Ive ever seen asked these questions I may have trusted them enough to let them help me! Id still like to see someone but been scared off by "and how does that make you FEEL?"
For a crash? Man, Id love to be in a train smash! I dont know why....I just think a train coming off the tracks would be cool.
Chocolate AND vanilla. Dont make me choose....
Intersting and unusual job? Ive had DOZENS but we'll say Sexpo, cos it was COOL!
What am I afraid of? Nothing, except something bad happening to someone I love, or one of my animals. Making a tradgic error in judgement that hurts something I love....Those are the big ones. Then we go down the list to losing inspiration, losing my talent, or losing my spiritual powers.

Love the topic, Mis!
1. I agree with Chic - definitely something like a semi-trailer or a truck. Actually, scrap that. Let's go for a biggie - a tank or a submarine.
2. Chocolate - I'll take this the safe way. Vanilla bores me.
3. Never had an interesting or unusual job - most jobs have been desk jobs.
4. Waking up and realising I'm the only person in the whole world.

Hi Mis

Can I lie on the couch?

1) What would be the other vehicle? I would like to be in anything BIGGER and STRONGER than the other vehicle. So definitely not a bike, motor bike or mini...
2) Chocolate for sure
3) Hmmmm I have never really had an interesting job - most memorable (and not for good reasons!) was picking potatoes in England and operating a child`s train ride at an amusement park.
4) I am most afraid of the dark! I get very panicky in dark places or in murky water... I need to be able to see EXACTLY where I am and who/what else is around!

MIs,

1. I think I prefer the green car (in this crash)... better odds?
2. Chocolate - everytime!
3. Home schooling my kids and Tarot Card reading in my spare time.
4. Absolute true love-type bliss and intimacy... basically for me? Success.

Lilla ...

PS I'm waorking on overcoming the last one with emotional detoxing.

Hi Mis

Okay, a crash? Um ... well ... I'd be in the vehicle that stops and offers assistance when they witness a crash happen.

Chocolate ... goes without saying.

Interesting job? Teaching my children about childbirth. They were both present at the birth of Mac (born in May) and there was nothing I could say that would really ready them for that experience. I failed miserably, they learnt well.

Most afraid of? Like most people I'm afraid of failure.

How do I feel now? Like a new woman. Thanks, how much do I owe you?
A.
PS How about enlightening us on your answers!

What happened to...."and how does that make you feel?"

haha! I am so not that kind of therapist. That particular phrase never comes out of my mouth. Some folks do not trust a therapist who says that

I already know I'm crazy
You do not sound crazy at all.

losing loved ones.
wouldn't be happy about hurting the other car / people
You have empathy

your most interesting job
Rather not say!
you have excellent boundaries...

Thanks so much for letting me know about the numbering issue

Thanks for playing!

1.i like the Tank idea! I was thinking of something like a huge SUV like a Tahoe, But the tank is much better. <grins>

2.Chocolate for sure!! That is one of the most perfect foods. Dark, light, white, whatever, it's all wonderful.

3.In home care i think would have been mymost interesting job. I took careof this 97 year older farmer that lived in a town of 12 people. He told me sooo many stories. I just LOVED walking down memory lane with him. I also worked for many altimers patients. Thats very interesting. Everyday i'd go back and they'd have no clue who i was. Trying to cook for me and pamper me. I'd say every single day,"Oh no, let me cook for you today and you can cook for me tomarow. <soft smile> They'd say "Oh your sooo sweet, ok we'll cook tomarow." They wanted grits every single day. Ofcourse i'd talk them into other things. I miss that job and may do that when my kids are done with homeschooling.

4. i'm afraid of the dark. Still sleep with a night light, but i'll go ghost hunt in the dark. lol Its realy something with falling to sleep in the dark. My cousin fell asleep at thirty and died in his sleep so thats a big part of it. I also have had night terrors most of my life.
Another big fear is loosing my husband. Took ten years to find the perfect man. Don't want to loose him now. I just can'timagine mylife without him in it.
Another, loosing one of your children before you. Not supose to happen that way.

This was a great one!! Thanks, Tammy

You sound like an adventurous soul.

I wouldn't dream of it...

Sexpo... what is this? New to me...

What am I afraid of? Nothing, except something bad happening to someone I love, or one of my animals. Making a tradgic error in judgement that hurts something I love....Those are the big ones. Then we go down the list to losing inspiration, losing my talent, or losing my spiritual powers.
I think you fears are universal and well founded. These same fears keep me up at night sometimes.

Great protector factors!

Has anything interesting happened at your desk jobs? You know find the interesting in the boring...

Waking up and realising I'm the only person in the whole world.
How scary it would be to be all alone. Your friends and family must mean a lot to you.

Thanks for stopping by!

I love the bigger and stronger aspect.....

Chocolate for sure
Gotta respect folks who know what they want.

picking potatoes in England and operating a child`s train ride at an amusement park.
Very interesting..... I am sure that you have some great stories with both

I am most afraid of the dark! I get very panicky in dark places or in murky water... I need to be able to see EXACTLY where I am and who/what else is around!
I would concur that life is murky enough. Having a crystal clear perspective is preferred.

Wow that is a mighty tall order. I applaud your efforts. How sweet to want to share this miracle with your family.

Most afraid of? Like most people I'm afraid of failure.
Amen to that sister!

How do I feel now? Like a new woman. Thanks, how much do I owe you?
HAHAHAHA

2. Vanilla AND chocolate please

3. I have had several interesting jobs.... being a handler for musical acts was one of my favs... I was also a model (for the European branch of an American publication)
