Therapeutic Myths: Part One
May 25th 2008 02:23
When folks start therapy, they sometimes hope that the therapist will hand them a set of "one size fits all" solutions. Turns out therapists expect folks to solve their own problems. We don't have a big ass broom to clean out the dark corners of the mind or help them move into a healthy perspective as easily as spring cleaning. We don't scrub out unpleasant memories from between the tiles in the brain or decorate with Happy Thoughts. It is up to folks to get rid of their collection of hurts and grudges that have been packed away over the years. There is no spackling over the cracks, gaps, and holes in the psyche or bleaching away the stains of past hurts. It is a long process that takes a lot of hard work so get on the rubber gloves, apron, and combat boots and a hopeful attitude.
