Repackaging Your Career
November 12th 2007 04:22
Letting your job become routine is hazardous to your salary not to mention job security.
Five signs your career is stalled
1. Others who were hired about the same time as you, at the same level, have been promoted or have moved on to better jobs.
2. It’s been more than a year since your last raise.
3. You have been in your job twice as long as anyone else in the same position.
4. Personal phone calls are part of your regular routine at work. There’s nothing wrong with a personal call, but the busier you are, the less time you have to chat with your sister.
5. You know exactly what you are going to do every day.
Ten Ways to Jump Start Your Current Career
1. Stay current. You read the daily business section and the same trade rag you have described to for a decade. Fine. So does everybody else. It’s time to deepen your knowledge by subscribing to trade journals, signing to industry newsletters and scanning message boards related to your field. When you come across a timely story that could affect your business, pass it along to your boss. If she has not seen it, you suddenly look very, very smart.
2. Dress like you mean it. A casual wardrobe signals a casual approach to work. Your best bet: Take a cue from your bosses’ attire.
3. Associate with doers. If a person with a negative attitude it is assumed that they have a negative attitude. Be seen with the people who the boss praises in meetings. Invite them to lunch. Ask them for advice. Walk by their office a lot.
4. Redecorate: Your workplace is an extension of you. A framed photo or two your desk shows that you have a life outside of work. A “I don’t do Mondays” plaque shoes that you don’t understand the meaning of the word “professional”.
5. Speak up: The only way your superiors will remember you even attended a meeting is if you say something. Don’t worry if silence has become your habit over the years___it’s never too late to start speaking up. Request clarification of someone else’s idea, or better yet, introduce an idea of your own. Before each meeting, make a habit of e-mailing the person who called it and asking her what will be covered.
6. Think positive.
7. Roll up your sleeves. A good employee never says, “That’s not in my job description.” You do what needs to be done.
8. Fill empty spaces. When you see an opportunity to work on a new project, pounce on it like a cheetah killing a ferret.
9. Send a message. Getting to the office so that you can get a jump on your work is highly effective.
10. Take a class. There is always more to learn. Enrolling in a job related class can solidify your knowledge and get you a certificate to show for it.

Sometimes I'd hand around a little longer for the money but as soon as I got a chance off I'd go.
Family first was always my motto.

Family first was always my motto too. I always chose careers that were family friendly. No late hours for this gal when my son was growing up. My career choices have never been bring but they haven't necessarily paid well. Good to see you!

About 6 weeks ago or so now I got a part time job (convention co-ordinator). I work from home and the hours are about 8 hours a week.
It's not my dream job but it is the first "real" job I've had in 6 years....you know, apart from the parenting and writing.... so I've kick started my CV again.
It's not a bad job...I still get to use my brain.
I was really scared about how easy I would get a job after being out of the workforce for so long.
Lucky for I have friends in high places.
Love & stuff
